Melbourne Sports Centres – Lakeside Track Redevelopment Update
The redevelopment work at Melbourne Sports Centres – Lakeside is in full swing with the new and improved IAAF Class 1 certified athletics track set to be ready in January 2020 ahead of a huge Olympic Year of training.
The track will be made using Rekortan® M99, a seamless surface, designed for records, best times and international elite athletics. With its high energy return, it offers optimum acceleration and it’s robust design results in high performance and a long lifespan.
The redevelopment work will see Melbourne Sports Centres – Lakeside reaffirm its status as the premier athletics venue in Victoria. Lakeside is the home of Athletics Australia, the Victorian Institute of Sport and Athletics Victoria. The facility also hosts Football, with South Melbourne Football Club training and playing their NPL Victoria and FFA Cup matches at the venue.
With the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, it’s going to be a big year for athletics. With many Australian representatives preparing for the games at Lakeside. 400m runner Morgan Mitchell, Shot-putter Damien Birkinhead and Middle-distance runner Jarryd Clifford are just a handful of Victoria and Australia’s best who call Lakeside home.
The track has played host to many state, national and international events since its re-opening as an Athletics facility in 2010. The 2017 Nitro Athletics event saw the world’s fastest ever man, Usain Bolt, grace the track. Whilst in 2012, the Melbourne Track Classic was also held at the venue, with athletics legends such as Asafa Powell and Steve Hooker winning medals.
